A quick peek after the first series of mid-week games:
Well after the first series of mid week games, let’s take a quick look at the sections now as the various tables start to show some tell-tale signs.
Village United lead the pack, but went down in their last outing 1-2 to Pearse Celtic A who are really showing well of late. Pearse are currently in second spot and if they can keep this good form going, they will certainly start to advertise themselves as serious challengers for the title.
Innishvilla finds themselves in third spot after slipping a bit, but a big plus for them is their involvement still in the AOH Cup where they will take on Village United in a two legged semi-final affair.
Carrigtwohill United A are in fourth with just two games left and will be hoping to have had enough points chalked up to ensure they stay out of trouble when they finish.
Champions Park United A are lurking menacingly in fifth spot and are going very well at the minute. They will certainly be involved in the chase for the title once again this time round.
Glen Celtic are next up and are blowing hot and cold really while following them are Grattan United A who have quite a number of games to catch up with.
The problem here is staying away from injuries as well as having everyone available to you for those midweek games.
Then, it looks like Coachford, Glenthorn Celtic A and Blarney Street Athletic now find themselves in the battle against relegation.
So, for them, it is a fight to the death from here on with everyone having to roll up their sleeves to give 100% effort over the next number of games.
I can’t remember a time when this section was so competitive and of course the proof of this is how the section has now turned into a 4 x horse race between Knocknaheeney Celtic A who currently lead the table, Bohemians who have slipped up a bit of late, Lakewood Athletic, who have games in hand, but certainly looking the part and Rylane who have bounced back into contention after some recent good results.
Just to remind you, the first divisions are three round leagues with 1 going up and 1 going down.
Although Blackstone Rovers suffered a 0-4 defeat at the hands of leaders Fairview on Thursday night, they still have four games in hand, but with the midweek games in now and the difficulties sometimes with players trying to make those fixtures because of work commitments or otherwise, it is all about points on the board at this stage of the season.
Buttevant are in third spot and look to be well in the hunt for the title also here, but again, they have a lot of games to catch up with and sometimes like I said, this can be a difficult obstacle to overcome unless you are lucky to have everyone available for most games anyway.
So, for me, the title is between these three and we could yet see some twists and turns here.
This one is not over yet by a long shot and with the amount of football still left to play, we could see various patterns starting to emerge as there are a number of teams here in positions to make a difference if one of them can string a few good results together.
But, I think the race for the crown is going to come down to St. John Bosco A, Leeview Athletic A and Knockraha A.
This section is another 3 x round league with two promoted and one relegated.
Looking at the tables here, the bookies favourite must surely be Donoughmore Athletic, but we all know how strange football can be – especially when it comes to the Fat lady having to sing before the title is won.
With two going up, you would be looking at Pearse B and Donoughmore Athletic, but if CFC Banteer can string some consistent results together from here on, they could upset the applecart.
Corkbeg lead the way here, but to be honest, they have more games than the others played.
For me, it would look like City Wanderers will take the crown here. Just for the record right now – both themselves and Churchvilla in the third division are the only two teams unbeaten in the league so far.
Glenthorn Celtic B of course have been doing very well also, but I think the turning point in this section was their defeat at the hands of City Wanderers last Tuesday evening when they went down 1-3 against the favourites.
On to the third divisions now and here, there will be 2 promoted from each section.
At this stage, you would be putting your house now on Central to win this section although Temple are still in their with a slight chance depending on their results and whether Central slip up.
But, either way, I guess these two will be promoted to the second division anyway.
Looks like this one is a three horse race between South Coast Athletic, Leeview Athletic B and Churchvilla.
But, to be honest, Churchvilla are looking very good right now and you need look only at their stats to back that up – after playing 13, they are undefeated with 10 x wins and 3 x draws – real title winning form you must admit.
However, this funny old game has thrown up surprises before so, let’s continue to watch this space.
There is still enough football to be played yet which could throw a few spanners in the works so, keep your eye on this space for further updates.
