Oscar Traynor Trophy – 23 November 2014

Cork AUL Team away to Kerry District League - 23 November 2014The Cork AUL team that drew with the Kerry District League in Tralee on 23 November 2014

Cork pegged back at the death

Kerry District League  1-1  Cork AUL
Brosnan (89)                               Rice (35)

In an intensely contested game in Mounthawk Park, the Kerry District League scored a contentious equaliser on 89 minutes to level the game and grab a valuable point in this Oscar Traynor Trophy game.

Both sides exchanged chances on 10 minutes following a lively opening to the game. First Gee Pakathorius had a shot from an acute angle saved by Fitzgibbon in the cork goal and then Ger Rice broke to the edge of the Kerry area but chose to pass when a shot looked the better option.

Kerry should have gone ahead on 12 minutes when they were awarded a penalty but Paudie O’Shea stroked his spot kick wide of the post to the relief of the Cork side and then Cork had the ball in the net a few minutes later after good work between Barry O’Donovan and Scott Callanan but it was ruled for an infringement.

Both sides were exchanging chances at this stage as the game flowed from end to end. Kerry’s Brian Murphy had a shot deflected for a corner on 20 minutes and then Howard Coakley shot wide from a good position a few minutes later.

Good work by Kerry on 30 minutes saw Sean Brosnan’s cross knocked back by Pakathorius to Paudie Quinn who shot wide while a couple of minutes later, Brosnan was put in by Pakathorius only for Fitzgibbon to come to cork’s rescue.

The lead goal came with 10 minutes to the break. Good work down the right saw Rice feed Coakley out wide. When his cross was only partially cleared, Rice picked up the loose ball to fire home to give Cork the lead at the break.

Both sides made substitutions at half time with Anthony Peelo coming on for the injured Rice and Fergal Mansell replacing Steve Conway for Kerry.

The home side were unlucky to not to be level on 50 minutes when a cross from the right was met by Aidan Callaghan but his powerful header came back off the bar an into the grateful hands of Fitzgibbon.

Kerry were beginning to dominate at this stage but were getting no change from a resolute Cork defense and Fitgibbon had to be at his best to push away a blistering effort from Brosnan on the hour mark.

Cork were happy to play on the break at this stage and Callanan had two half chances in two minutes to extend their lead but both efforts were saved by Hennessy in the home goal.

Kerry pushed hard for an equaliser and it looked like cork were destined to leave with all the points until that late, late effort saw Brosnan’s corner take a deflection in the box and be cleared only for the officials to decree that the ball had crossed the line to level the game.

Kerry: D Hennessy, S Conway, K McCarthy, S Guthrie, A Callaghan, C Bennett, S Brosnan, B Murphy, G Pakathorius, P Quinn, Roy Downey. Subs: F Mansell (h/t), G Griffin (55), S Scanlon (83).

Cork AUL: I Fitzgibbon, G Rice, J Falvey, V Lonergan, M Barrett, P Long, H Coakley, J McGrath, S Callanan, B O’Donovan, K Holland. Subs: A Peelo (h/t), M Long (74), W Corcoran (87), K McCarthy, I Skillington, B Keating.

Referee: D O’Shea
